Jan 6, Important survey about SEO/SEM

A recent study from SLI Systems asked 319 respondents about the importance of various technologies and tactics in terms of their effect on ecommerce strategy.

While the sample for the study was not necessarily large, it tended to support many preconceived ideas about which web technologies and techniques are the most effective for online retailers. Search engine marketing and optimization, which embodies both SEO and pay-per-click efforts, were clearly the most important marketing tools in the survey respondents opinion, garnering a vote of Very Important from 70 percent of those asked.

In the past year, the rise of the iPhone and other high-end handsets has meant that even more people use the Internet on their phone.

Companies have responded by creating more mobile-optimised websites, some of which now allow people to complete ecommerce transactions on the mobile, instead of simply researching for information.

May 21, Burlington Ontario Ecommerce Course

I have started the Sitesell Education Course up in Burlington as a result of requests from this area.

The 10 week course will start Saturday June 14th 2008 in the Frank Rose room at the Burlington Public Library on New Street.

It will run 10 consequtive Saturdays. Its a little different from the Humber course in that you need to bring your own laptop to attend. Theres no computer lab as in the Humber course. For that reason the price is cheaper, only $690.00 for the 10 weeks.

Considering the indepth attention you get thats and the fact that one full year of Sitesell is included, thats a deal thats hard to beat.

Sign up soon ! Attendance is limited to 10 students so I can give everyones website the attention it deserves.

Apr 20, When a blog wont work

Full-Blogging Is An All-Too-Common,
Important And Time-Sapping Strategic Error

Blogging. Everyones doing it.

And that is a financial mistake for most small businesses. Few make much money at blogging because it is usually the wrong way to grow an online business. That is important if you want your Web venture to be more than just a hobby (an activity or interest pursued for pleasure and not primarily for income).

Professional bloggers, and professional promoters of blogging, usually fail to mention the dated-content treadmill that they so desperately run upon every day. What happens when you stop blogging? You watch your traffic melt away. Why? Because Search Engines know that blog posts are like newspapers... good only for wrapping fish after a few days.

Apr 15, Measuring Website Effectiveness

We all know that you cant improve what you cannot measure. But how do you measure the effectiveness of your website?

1. Define success. For most ecommerce sites, success is the number and value of online sales, writes managing director Kumar Mehta in the white paper Top 10 Tips for Measuring the Success of Your Ecommerce Site. You may want to consider other metrics as well, such as number of catalogue requests or enewsletter subscriptions.

2. Capture the data you need and make analysis routine. When it comes to web analytics, a lack of data usually isnt a problem. But as Mehta notes, Clearly some data such as net influenced sales on the phone or store cant be captured via the web. For these you can consider using a different telephone number on the site or have discount coupons customers can print and take into stores.

3. Know your unique visits and visitors.

4. Watch your conversion rates. According to Paraspar, your order conversion rate should average between 2 percent and 10 percent. Dont just look at the percentage itself, though, but also how it trends over time.

5. View your average order value as an indicator of your sites sales effectiveness. The value of your orders can... indicate how good a salesperson your website is. Does it encourage customers to buy more products and more-expensive products? How does your site compare with your other channels? Is it the same or does it attract higher or lower spenders?

6. Know how people get to your site. That way you can analyze the quality and lifetime value of customers by source, and modify your marketing spend accordingly.

7. Track abandon rates and look at where in the shopping and checkout process visitors are dropping off.

8. Dont forget to measure email too. Open rates, click-through rates, unsubscribe requests, bounces, registrations created, orders generated and direct revenue are the key elements to track.

9. Determine what to do with each metric you track. For each metric you record, you should aim to make changes to your site to try to improve upon it. The key tools you have are site design and navigation, copy and targeted promotion.

10. Avoid paralysis by analysis. One way to do so is to continually talk with your customers and your customer service team.

Apr 12, Multitasking - The Tortoise and the Hare

David Meyer, a researcher at the University of Michigan, did a study with Joshua Rubinstein of the Federal Aviation Administration and Jeffery Evans of the University of Michigan to monitor how the brain performs when multi-tasking. According to the study, subjects lost time when they had to switch from one task to another, and time costs increased with the complexity of the tasks, so it took significantly longer to switch between more complex tasks. Time costs also were greater when subjects switched to tasks that were relatively unfamiliar. They got up to speed faster when they switched to tasks they knew better, an observation that may lead to interfaces designed to help overcome peoples innate cognitive limitations.

Do you eat lunch, chat with suppliers on your cell, drink coffee, and drive all at the same time? Maybe its time to give your brain a break by just doing one project at a time. It's like the old fable of the tortoise and the hare. The hare took off like a shot, getting distracted a thousand times along the way, the hare didnt even notice the tortoise focusing on one task and plodding away methodically to the finish line.

This is a great article that focuses on ecommerce password security written by the Guardian newspaper in the U.K. What I thought was important here was the article talks about how visitors view credit card security with far more importance that free giveaways advertised on an ecommerce site. Therefore by taking the trouble to assure your customers that their information is protected, both by the site and the credit card company, its possible more customers could be encouraged to buy.

Humber College, Etobicoke, Ontario , Canada has paired with Sitesell Education to offer a unique eCommerce training course.

The course sets people up with a fully functioning internet business at the end of the 10 week program. The focus on the business and marketing of the website rather than all the technical jargon. Because of this there are students going through the course who would not normally develop their own websites.

Students are local small business owners, work at home parents and include several active Ontario seniors. We have several seniors building websites in our present Winter 2008 class and in the October 2007 session there were 2 notable examples of websites built by older adults:

http://www.retire-your-own-way.com/
A Comprehensive guide to retirement by a very active senior

http://ahachi.com
Dr Anna Carling - An eighty year old proponent of the benefits of chinese medicine

At Humber the course is conducted in a computer lab and classes are 3 hours every Saturday for 10 weeks. The course is limited to 10 students per instructor so students get proper attention. After the course is completed, the instructors provide monthly meetings to make sure students are following the program and meeting their goals
