Tips for building an eCommerce site

Tips to building an ecommerce site

Go with what you know.If you are building an ecommerce site its far better topromote things you know a lot about. When you have something worthwhile to say about your products people are going to regard you as an expert in your field. You will gain visitors respect and they will trust your reccomendations. This is so much more powerful than trying to write sales copy to entice people to buy.

Product knowledge cant be faked - you really have to know what you are talking about.

Seek Professional Help.
If you do need training in creating an ecommerce site make sure the company you choose gives a complete description of what they are going to do for you . Make sure you know all the fees and additional charges up front. Many companies will try to hook you in with low fees only to bombard you with additional charges once they have you signed up. You should receive more than you pay for , not less. Look for the suppliers that overdeliver.

Drop the "Get Rich Quick" Mentality.
Building an ecommerce site takes careful planning. Make sure you have a chance at succeeding before you invest your time and money. Research the products and services you want to sell and verify there is proper demand to support your business model. If your model involves earning money from Google adsense, verify that adsense pays well for the website concept you have developed. You may need to switch gears so test three seperate business plans to see which holds the most promise.

Theres no such thing as free. There are "free" tools available for building an ecommerce website and some of them are genuinely useful. But all of them require your time. Your time is valuable - dont waste it. Time spent planning out your venture is nothing compared to the time and money you will spend trying to fix a broken venture that was started hastily and without proper focus.

Talk to the experts. Pay attention to the industry leaders and try to learn what it is that they do right. If you are able to , find someone who has an ecommerce website that is doing well and talk to them about it. There are plenty of meetings and conferences where you should be able to get an opportunity to do this. Learn to "pay it forward". Help others so that they will help you.
